New Zealand – in some ways it was so like Ireland. It’s a short flight to Christchurch from Sydney, at least by the standard of some flights I’ve taken and Ngaire(pronounced Nyree) Wilkinson met us at the airport.  She and her husband Michael live outside Christchurch in a place called Ohoka.  Although the area is mainly rural, urban life is not too far away making it an ideal mix. On our first day we took a stroll around the neighbourhood then Ngaire took us through Christchurch – a very English city – and up into the Port Hills which overlook the city. Again, a short distance from urban sprawl to semi-wilderness. Some great views here of Christchurch and Lyttelton, a port on the east side of the Hills. If you want to, you can take a gondola or cablecar up to Mount Cavendish. We ate at a place looking out at the Pacific.
